When she was young, Gladys decided to focus on her studies. Gladys West was born on October 27, 1930, in Sutherland, Virginia. The celebration will include watching a short video and learning about West, as well as exploring her contributions more closely by working directly with satellite data. Gladys West is a mathematician who helped develop GPS. West was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018. Learning Her Way through Town The town Gladys West was born in is Sutherland, Virginiaa community where people spent long hours working in fields and gardening to provide for their family. Gladys West, an Auxiliary from Sutherland, Virginia. She worked at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division as a mathematician and programmer, where she and her husband were two of only four black employees at the time. Because such technology is readily available, you can thank Dr. At a very young age, West knew she wanted to do something outside of your typically jobs in the late 1930’s and 1940’s. Gladys West is an American mathematician known for her contributions to the numerical modeling of the Earths hemisphere as well as her work in developing satellite geodesy models, incorporated into the Global Positioning System (GPS). In 1986, West published Data Processing System Specifications for the Geosat Satellite Radar Altimeter, a 60-page illustrated guide. She is now getting the recognition that she deserves for all of her hard work. West was a programmer in the Dahlgren Division for large-scale computers and a project manager for data-processing systems used in the analysis of satellite data. West is a mathematician who helped construct a geoid, a mathematical model of the Earth’s shape, making the invention of the GPS possible. Gladys West is the reason why we can check our directions when we are lost or having issues mapping where to go. We would be lost (literally) without the contributions of Gladys West.
